About BM

Barkley's Mouth is all about the NBA as we speak on what's going down in the Association today and what should be happening down the line.  It's all about the glory (and disgrace) of the NBA. Our style is down, dirty, honest, and entertaining, just like Charles Barkley himself. Thanks for peeping what we throw down!

How Will Allen Iverson Affect The Young Grizzly Cubs?

iverson-to-grizz

If there was ever a time where the term, "a little birdie..." applies, it's now. Free-agent Allen Iverson tweeted that he will be joining the Memphis Grizzlies, so expect an official announcement soon. By the way, will a Mayan shaman tweet the end of the world in 2012? It just seems all the breaking news is coming from Twitter. But, how awesome would that be - "Y'all better kiss your mother effin ass goodbye!"

In any case, while the alleged end of the world isn't happening for a few years, it just might be the end of development for the trio of cubbies known as Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, and O.J. Mayo.  Am I exaggerating?  Maybe.  But can you see where this might be possible?  Definitely.  NOW, don't get me wrong - Allen Iverson is a great player.  If the question is, "Who is arguably the best small man to ever mix it up on the court with the big guys?" I truly believe that Iverson is the answer.  Apologies to Nate Archibald and Jeff Van Gundy.

I love Iverson (no homo).  I wish him nothing but the best, but I don't see how this will benefit the aforementioned trio of young players that the Grizzlies are presumably counting on to step up their game and form a winning team.  As if it wasn't bad enough to trade for Zach Randolph (yes, I said, "FOR"), a known black hole in the post, the Grizz went ahead and traded for a wing player that demands the rock more than Paris Hilton demands attention.

And Iverson is going to come off the bench?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry, I thought a paragraph of laughter was warranted.

I don't see how Iverson will be content being a bench player, a stipulation of his signing a reported $3.5 million one-year contract.  I believe Iverson still has the ability to be a starter, which is why Michael Heisley (owner that needs to sell tickets), Chris Wallace (how is he still a GM), and Lionel Hollins (soon to be fired head coach) have to be kidding themselves in thinking that Iverson will be happy coming off the pine.  It won't be long before Conley sees his time start to diminish at the lead guard position.  Can Conley and AI play in the same backcourt?  Sure.  However, that probably takes time away from Gay or Mayo, and if they decide to go small with Randolph at the center spot, Marc Gasol and/or Hasheem Thabeet, two more young players the Grizz want to develop, suffer.  Trust me, they'll have their own problems with Z-Bo in the frontline rotation.

I just don't see how this signing of AI will work - with him off the bench or starting.  Like I said, I think Iverson can still be an effective starter and because of that, he'll justifiably take some burn away from someone, be it Conley, Gay, or Mayo.  And, you have to think that Iverson will be playing hard for a new contract next season and to once again prove all the doubters wrong.

Too bad, the price of Iverson's redemption will cost the youngsters.

Memphis' Problems
written by Chipc3, October 02, 2009
This is the biggest issue surrounding the Grizzlies this year. The biggest question mark however is are the aforementioned trio the proper players to build the core of your team around?

If Conley is so great at PG then Iverson would be foolish to risk losing his career in a battle for egotistical pride about starting. However, if Conley can't beat out the 34 yr old fading star then how bright is his star anyway?

Iverson can't risk another year like last year. He barely stayed in the league as it is. Would his agent expect more money next season if he blows up again this season?

Iverson may not be happy with his lot in life but he isn't dumb. He'll play within the rules.
