About BM
Barkley's Mouth is all about the NBA as we speak on what's going down in the Association today and what should be happening down the line. It's all about the glory (and disgrace) of the NBA. Our style is down, dirty, honest, and entertaining, just like Charles Barkley himself. Thanks for peeping what we throw down!

Man, my mind is mixing at a million miles per minute. Is it true? Nope, just wanted to use some alliteration, but honestly, this whole Rashard Lewis taking a steroid precursor has me thinking that I really shouldn't care about performance enhancing drugs in sports. I mean, unless it's actually illegal by law, such as the steroids that Barry Bonds took or didn't take or didn't know he took because someone tapped him on his right shoulder and that someone dropped steroids in his drink over his left shoulder, who cares? Seriously, there's a ton of ways to look at this Shard situation and all of them would be valid to some degree, but how would you objectively judge what's indubitably right? So, I think I'll just not care anymore.
However, I need to blog about it because it's news and, frankly, if there were some performance enhancing drug for blogging not called "plagiarizing Dave Deckard," I'd take it out of necessity. So, you'll have to bear with my indifference until the Red Bull kicks in. Here are some incomplete thoughts/questions/bold statements that will blow your mind about Shardtroversy! (Queue dramatic music):
- Lewis got busted for taking DHEA also known as dehydroepiandrosterone, or as I like to call it DHEA; it is a precursor to steroids, so don't get your panties in a bunch, especially if you use DHEA for its induction of labor function. Breathe.
- You can go to your local vitamin shop or superstore and buy DHEA on the cheap! Of course, you can also not go to the store and get it for free since it's made in the body already. I'll go with that option because one of my favorite sayings is "If it's for free, it's for me." And it's noticeable that I've never turned down a dinner invite.
- Either Lewis is lying or he's just lazy; he says that he didn't know that he took an illegal substance (according to the NBA, anyway), but how can you as an athlete in a league not know what's legal and what isn't? Or maybe he's smoking another illegal substance by law and just got lazy about doing the research.
- Does anyone blame a professional athlete for trying to improve their production? I bet some do, but I also would lay down five dollars and fifty-two cents that some don't. And I know that most athletes and former athletes would make that bet with me. Of course you shouldn't break the law, but where's the line of "cheating" and "too much enhancement" between someone taking the almighty roid versus getting Tommy John Surgery, which actually makes your elbow stronger? Or getting eye surgery to get better than 20/20 vision? All of those are artificial enhancements, aren't they?
- "But, how about the kids? How can Rashard Lewis now be a role model for them?" I ask, why should he be? As a parent, I'm pretty sure parents should be the role models, not athletes. Or how about a teacher or clergyman... although a lot of them are starting to be suspect nowadays... okay, let's stick with my first thought, parents should be the role models. And if there aren't any parents around, well, then those kids are just going to turn out to be menaces to society like the Black Eyed Peas, what can I tell you?
- And if anyone wants to take the moral highground, by all means, get on the soapbox, but it's come to the point in sports, unfortunately, that every athlete has to be put through the ringer of "is he cheating or is he not"? Sure, it sucks big time for those athletes doing the hard work naturally, but that's the way it goes nowadays. Sad? Of course. Infuriating? Yup, especially if you're Hank Aaron. But, you know what makes people forget about all of the controversy? Winning. Okay, winning and the natural short attention span of people today thanks to the media's constant barrage of news. And I include us bloggers as media as well... except we're cooler than the mainstream media. Have you seen Detroit 4 Lyfe?
- Let's be honest, there's barely any integrity in sports anymore and if there is, it's a minority in the happenings of professional sports. And depending on the school and program, college sports as well. If you want to feel bad for anyone in today's sportsworld, have pity on your grandfathers and grandmothers because they must feel sick seeing all of the crap that's happening in the present. How happy it must have been being ignorant to the shenanigans (man, I really like this word) of their favorite athletes.
- And extrapolate what you will from this bold statement: "They don't pay my bills, I pay theirs."
Enjoy this controversy until the next one, but don't be surprised if the Orlando Magic do just fine without Lewis the first ten games of the season because Dwight Howard is going to dominate! Because we all know that his ridiculous full grown man-head deltoids are all natural, right? Oh wait... do you smell that? Dwightroversy! Have fun with that... I'll be busy reading Blazersedge.
